*Noted : This film will be for the most part silent so the script will comprise of actions and descriptions of the scene.* - Alfred will remain silent and Stoppy will speak for him. His actions will do the talking in the case of Alfred.
MUSIC? – What kind of soundtrack?
Characters:
Alfred – An elderly and retired individual who has dedicated his spare time to volunteer as a crossing guard out of his own goodwill. Sadly, like many other crossing guards, he is overlooked for his kind deed and often feels unimportant. He does not want to quit however, as he’ll be forced to live in a retirement home like many other elderly individuals who are not for the most part treated well in these homes.
“Stoppy” the Stop Sign – An inanimate stop sign that Alfred wields on a daily basis. Stoppy acts as a voice to the silent wishes of the elderly. It’s representative of how people will listen to a sign rather than the person holding the sign. It shows how the elderly are not acknowledged enough. So, in essence, his role in the film will be to present data and statistics about the elderly and the abuse they withstand. In all, stoppy is a spokesperson for Alfred as he sleeps.
Little Girl – Near the end of the film, a small girl will appear on the corner of the street waiting at the lights. Traffic will be zooming by at the time and she is frightened by their intimidating presence. She is new to traveling by herself, possibly on her first day of school or something. After Alfred wakes up he sees this helpless girl and immediately comes to her rescue and aids her in crossing the street. This will be the last scene that shows his importance. He is a guiding light to the youth of today.
Character intro – “Text & Close Ups”
*Additions in green
We could start by depicting his early morning routine. Him getting out of bed with a smile upon his face etc… ready for the day ahead. How he travels to get to his job is by using the ttc, and add in a slight hint to the entire motive of the video by showing his interactions with others. The ttc is for the most part full and a group of young teenagers are causing quite a ruckus and filling up seats with their bags or belonging. Alfred, being old and all, is in need of a seat due to his weak knees so he asks for one kid to move his stuff. The kid refuses and insults Alfred for his old age. Alfred remains submissive and is forced to stand for the rest of the bumpy ride until he arrives at his corner.
The first scene/ intro:
Alfred is standing at his “office” at the corner of [street names] & _. The weather is somewhat gloomy but this doesn’t deter Alfred because he is glad to be there and dedicated. Slowly, people walk by Alfred and his regular day unveils. People are rude to him and pass by him with no acknowledgement or consideration. Alfred is drained after all this in somewhat part to his old age as well, so he decide to rest and take a seat on porch steps when his post is not as busy.
Show what Alfred dreams about, possibly the horrors or extreme circumstances in his life where he is being tortured by younger generations.
Alfred inevitably dozes off for a moment, giving his stop sign a prime opportunity to teach the viewer a lesson. It miraculously comes to life and stares at Alfred to make sure he is still sleeping. He then walks out in the sidewalk and addresses his crowd; the viewer
Stoppy: Ya I know, I know. Stop signs aren’t supposed to talk, walk, or breathe for that matter. But suspend your imagination just for a moment and listen up. I’m “Stoppy” and I’m Alfred’s stop sign. . (Right now he’s probably having a nightmare about the very abuse he withstands on an everyday basis) Alfred’s been my pal for quite a few months now, and even though he might not know I’m alive, I like to think he does. I’m basically a first person account of Alfred’s life and like to refer to myself as his spokesperson. See, Alfred’s a pretty quiet guy so he doesn’t speak much and therefore, does not express his feelings. However, I know what this guy feels.
Add in later - [… After a long day, I admit, Alfred does fall asleep. Who can blame the guy, he is 87 years old. So he rests on the porch steps or power naps as I like to refer to them as.]
Stoppy jumps out of Alfred’s hand and with no one around, he decides to roam the sidewalk. A pull down white screen miraculously appears and stoppy now has a pointer in hand ready for a presentation.
Stoppy crosses the street on his own will as he is a stop sign after all. “See I have no problem crossing the street, but for the younger folks, they really need Alfred there.”
Stoppy: I’m here to inform you guys about the unspoken problem of elderly abuse. These silent and modest heroes that walk among us usually don’t get the recognition they deserve and even get disrespected for the most part. Their wise, humble, and willing to spread their knowledge at any time but very few seems to realize this. This is a shame because these individuals have so much to offer to society.
Stoppy begins to present stats about elderly abuse, facts, etc… He also mentions great old people of the past and even his own past family of signs. This quirky presentation eventually ends with Stoppy rolling the white screen back up and throwing away his pointer after noticing a little girl waiting to cross the street.
The camera pans to small girl who is petrified of the rushing traffic whizzing by her small frame.
Stoppy: Oh look, perfect opportunity to show you guys what I mean.
Stoppy quickly runs back into Alfred’s hand and gently nudges him on the shoulder to wake him from his nap. Alfred quickly jumps up and notices the little girl waiting.
Alfred (mumbling): This is what I live for.
Alfred proceeds to do his job and helps the girl cross the road with the help of Stoppy of course. Both of them are content with their work.
Little girl: Thanks mister.
Alfred: No problem.
The film ends with a close up of Alfred’s face with a satisfied grin along with Stoppy as he winks at the camera.
Told you so.
Disclaimer: Stoppy’s name is subject to change. Eventually.
Human Rights Script Production Notes
Things to get done include drawing out the storyboard frame by frame. The writing is for the most part accomplished, now I just need to polish it up. Also, I should look over the time within each frame and mark down an Estimated Time.
Create a working title to match the theme and tone of the video. Refrain from calling it untitled.
Think up a brand new character name for Stoppy with a less childish tone. Possibly Fred because it’s simple and awesome.
Base the character of Alfred off Michael Caine because he’s also awesome and very representative of what I picture Alfred as. (SEE PICTURE DOWN THERE)
Sountrack? – What will it consist of? Right now, I’m thinking of having one continuous track playing throughout however I might have some dialogue.
After all these pre-production steps are done I’ll be ready to start animating.
